Seminar on Advancing Detection Technology for Ensuring the Quality of Halal Food​


A one day seminar on 'Advancing Detection Technology for Ensuring the Quality of Halal Food' organised by the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources was held on 23rd May 2011, at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom, The Empire Hotel & Country Club, Jerudong.

The guest of honour to officiate the seminar was Yang Mulia Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

The main aim of the seminar is to enable the participants to share the original works of the world-class scientists in their fields on the cutting-edge technologies and new methods and findings related to the Halal. It also hopes to promote awareness on the composition of food and dietary products available in the market and to contribute some thoughts in establishing a world-class Halal Science Centre in Brunei Darussalam.

The five international speakers invited for this seminar are:

• Professor Dr. Yun-Hwa Peggy Hsieh, Department of Nutrition, Food & Exercise Sciences, Florida State University Tallahassee, Florida, USA;

• Professor Dr. Eiichi Tamiya, Department of Applied Physics, Osaka University, Osaka Japan;

• Dr. Quamrul Hasan, President , Bioinnovare Co., Ltd, Kobe, Japan; and 

• Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Tariqur Rahman, Department of Biomedical Science, International Islamic University Malaysia Kuantan, Malaysia.

• Mr. Chihiro Nakanishi, Medical Department, Tanaka Kikinzoku, Kogyo K.K. Japan.

In this seminar, the invited international speakers will address the need, principle, approach and technical details of the advanced technologies and methods they have successfully developed to determine the Halal as well as share some of the important findings from their studies for Muslim consumer protection.

Four papers are presented, two papers presented in the morning session entitle, 'Immunochemical detection of hidden blood protein in dietary products', by Professor Dr. Yun-Hwa Peggy and 'The most effective and economic field test for pork detection' by Mr. Chihiro Nakanishi, Medical Department, Tanaka Kikinzoku, Kogyo K.K. Japan.

The afternoon session two papers are presented by Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Tariqur Rahman on ' Biochemical analysis of the meat to uncover differences in slaughtering methods' and by Professor Dr. Eiichi Tamiya on 'The rapid method of meat species identification based on portable electrochemical DNA sensor'. The Seminar was facilitated by Dr. Quamrul Hasan, President , Bioinnovare Co., Ltd, Kobe, Japan.

Present at the seminar are the senior government officials and senior officers from the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Health, other government agencies and academic institutions in the country.

During the seminar, several questions and answers sessions are conducted to enable the speakers and participants to share and discuss their view on the above topics. 

The seminar is concluded with a wrap-up session chaired by Yang Mulia Hajah Normah Suria Hayati binti PJDSMDSU (Dr) Haji Awang Jamil Al-Sufri, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
