THE TWENTY FIFTH MEETING OF THE ASEAN SECTORAL WORKING GROUP ON LIVESTOCK

(THE 25TH ASWGL)

 

Thursday, 27 April 2017 – The twenty fifth meeting of the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Livestock (The 25th ASWGL) opening ceremony took place at Bilik Mesyuarat Permai, Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood, Yang Mulia Puan Hajah Aidah binti Haji Mohd Hanifah through a welcoming speech and official photo session with the attending delegates. The meeting was attended by the ASEAN member state delegates and government officials of Brunei Darussalam, Kingdom of Cambodia, Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, ASEAN Secretariat, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Absent with acknowledgement were the ASEAN delegates of, Lao PDR and Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The 25th ASWGL meeting is held yearly as a technical body under the ASEAN key initiatives for livestock development, animal diseases and threats to the human health through zoonotic diseases. This year, Brunei Darussalam through alphabetical rotation, is privileged to be the host country and chair for the 25th ASWGL Meeting from 27th April to 29th April 2017.  

Under the ASWGL key initiatives and achievements, with the support from Senior Officials Meeting – ASEAN Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry (SOM-AMAF) and the ASEAN Ministers for Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF), the body continues to recognize the significant socio-economic impacts of animal diseases as well as the development and implementation of strategic frameworks and mechanisms at national and regional levels. Among the achievements through this technical body is the priority transboundary animal diseases (TADs) such as Foot and Mouth Disease and Avian Influenza, ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Animal Health and Zoonoses (ACCAHZ), strengthening veterinary services programs, ASEAN Regional Animal Health Information System (ARAHIS) and collaborative programmes with Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The initiatives are in line with addressing challenges that is affecting ASEAN and globally such as food insufficiency, effects on livelihood and movement of animals due to zoonoses and public health, international and regional economy and trade through harmonization of standards as well as climate change with its impact to livestock production.

From the meeting, it is hoped ASEAN countries will continue to strive hard in working together for a safer and more prosperous ASEAN community taking into account a continued political support and commitment. These efforts are further strengthened through continued collaboration and partnership with dialogue and development partners.
